Drummer / singer / singing drummer / songwriter / drum instructor, born in Gothenburg, Sweden, March 27th, 1963. Started playing at age 12 and at 14 got to study with ÖYVIND EIGARD, 1st percussionist at STORA TEATERN (The Lyrical Theatre ) in Gothenburg, Sweden. Joined his first local band NON PLUS ULTRA around this time and at 15 started substituting in his father´s band playing different styles of music in restaurants and at private parties. Went to Art school for a year but at 17 decided to focus on drumming. By this time he had his own drum students. He studied with Eigard for 6 years total. Was now in highly ambitious artrock-band MEMORIA, a group that incorporated a string quartet. In 1982 MEMORIA won a semi-final in a band competition called POP-82 but broke up the same year.
Enter BISCAYA
In 1982, 19 years old, Löfman and his mate from MEMORIA, guitarist Pär Edwardson, now formed a new band, a hard rock act they called WILD IRIS. They recorded a four song demo and in early 1983 travelled to Stockholm to see record companies and landed a record deal with Swedish Electra, switched band name to BISCAYA and continued to write songs to have enough material for an Lp.
The original plan was to have local keyboard player and friend MATS OLAUSSON who had helped out on the demo, as a permanent member, but instead MAGNUS STRÖMBERG ( ex-MEMORIA, PUBLIC ) stepped in when the record company wanted the band to hurry up and record their debut album that same summer. OLAUSSON at the time was busy in Gothenburg rock act MOTVIND.
There were some speculations that the reason for the rush was that ELECTRA wanted to have BISCAYA compete with the bands EUROPE and TRASH, who had recently recorded their debut albums in the same studio, and also had their record companies and management offices operating in that very same building.
BISCAYA produced two records; the debut album "BISCAYA" (1983, RCA Victor) released worldwide, and a maxi Ep "BISCAYA on 45" (1984, RCA Victor) and got a bit of a following in Japan.
Parting with BISCAYA in the mid-eighties, Löfman jammed for a period with talented 16 year-old guitarist Michael Myllynen (Mikael Moon) from Gothenburg, later in MADISON and KING DIAMOND. They found singer Pete Sandberg (Von Rosen, Alien) but shortly after, Michael joined MADISON. Unable to find a new suitable guitarist, Löfman and Sandberg gave up the project.
In ’86 / ’87 Löfman toured Scandinavia extensively with Swedish blues-rockers BO WILSON BAND. Went on to handle the drums / lead vocals for several club bands and also did studio sessions. He worked with lots of people in the rock / pop genre in the Gothenburg area, guitarist and longtime friend MAX ABBEY (Ultravox, Annelie Rydé, Strasse) being one of them.
In the ’90´s Lofman got more and more into singing lead in cover bands and soon handled vocals and drums simultaneously. By this time he was booking the bands he were in himself.
In 2000 Löfman joined hard rock / metal act DESTINY, which was now being reformed by leader STEFAN BJÖRNSHÖG. Recorded four albums with the band; "FUTURE OF THE PAST" (2003, GMR) and "BEYOND ALL SENSE 2005" ( a re-recording, 2005, GMR) which were released, and "NOTHING LEFT TO FEAR" ( also a re-recording) and the all new "GLOBAL WARMING" ( rec. sessions in 2008) not yet released. Touring with DESTINY included a show at the SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL in 2002 and supporting former BLACK SABBATH singer TONY MARTIN on a tour with his band in Sweden in 2006.
Löfman toured Brazil in 2004 with HAMMERFALL bassplayer MAGNUS ROSÉN, recorded with ROSÉN in 2006, an album called "SET ME FREE Jazz-Funk" (2007, LBM Produc.) which featured guests IA EKLUND (Freak Kitchen), ULF WAKENIUS, NILS K. RUE (Pagan´s Mind), URZULA DUDZIAK (Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius, Sting etc.) , ANDY LaROQCUE (King Diamond) and JAVIERA MUNOS.
Recorded again, this time in a a guest appearence, for another album with ROSÉN and The GOTHENBURG SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - "PAST FUTURE" (2010, NAXOS). Recorded album "LOCAL HEROES" (2011, ELT/Dusty Road Rec.) with FRETLESS in 2010 and did a few concerts before moving on.
Besides doing live gigs and studio work, LOFMAN is also a drum instructor ( since age 17 ) and has helped hundreds and hundreds of students through the years, working at schools and privately. In 2011 he started the "BIRGER LOFMAN DRUM STUDIO" in Gothenburg, where he takes on students as well as records his drum tracks for various projects.
